Mastercard: Operational Excellence Is Key to Unlocking True Value of AI
Even as the exciting world of artificial intelligence throws up technological breakthroughs and thrilling demos every day, the real test for critical sectors such as finance and payment systems starts with ensuring this technology operates flawlessly within the systems upon which economies rely. Greg Ulrich, Chief AI and Data Officer at Mastercard, emphasized that the true potential of artificial intelligence can only be realized through high operational standards and scalability.
Ulrich stated that there is no place for a ‘move fast and fix things later’ approach when it comes to the use of artificial intelligence by banks and payment institutions. He explained that where artificial intelligence is deployed in areas such as payment authorizations, fraud detection or risk management, decisions cannot be reversed and, once trust is lost, it is hard to regain.
AI: easy to celebrate, difficult to implement
Greg Ulrich, highlighting four key strategic areas for a sustainable positioning of AI at the heart of commercial systems, emphasized the importance of organizational structure and standards with these words: “Decentralization without standards creates risk, while centralization without proximity to business units slows down the pace of impact. Striking the right balance is vital. AI maturity is built not only with data scientists, but also with engineers, product leaders, and specialists who understand how models behave in the real world.”
Priority in innovation: maximum value and genuine need
Mastercard is focusing its artificial intelligence investments on creating new capabilities for its customers and boosting the productivity of its staff. While the company is developing Agentic Commerce technologies, personalization tools and fraud solutions based on vast datasets for banks and retailers, it is also rolling out AI-powered coding assistants and customer support tools for its own staff. Ulrich emphasizes that the secure integration of technology into core operations is the most important innovation touchstone for financial institutions.
Transparency at the core as the first and most crucial step in building trust
Stressing that trust in financial services is non-negotiable, Ulrich summarized his approach to transparency and governance as follows: “Governance is a fundamental force that impacts every stage of the project, ensuring scalability and accountability of AI from the very outset. Many believe that governance slows down processes; yet our experience shows the exact opposite. When there is an established governance structure in place, teams can focus solely on innovation and addressing customer needs.”
Success is an outcome of years of meticulous implementation
Mastercard’s recent recognition by Fast Company as a leader in Applied Artificial Intelligence and its top ranking in the Evident AI Index for Payments are seen as a reflection of the company’s long-term strategy. According to Ulrich, these accolades are the result not only of today’s efforts but also of data-driven discipline and a fraud-fighting vision that have been in place for years.
Mastercard continues to translate this technology from theory into practice and build trust in every transaction in latest foundational AI models through applications such as Mastercard Agent Suite and Virtual C-Suite, which incorporate AI into decision-making. As Greg Ulrich puts it: “The models will improve, and capabilities will expand. What really matters is that the systems we have established continue to build trust in every transaction and decision.
